In the SOU Music Recital Hall, 450 S. Mountain Avenue, Ashland
Celebrate the holidays with festive carols from around the world, Renaissance motets, newly-composed pieces, and a visit by the North Medford High School Choir. The choir will be accompanied by a variety of instruments including organ, piano, harp, flute and Nyckelharpa.
Feature works in “Welcome Yule!” include: lush motets by award-winning American composer Morten Lauridsen and Swiss composer Ivo Antognini; Scottish composer James MacMillan’s electrifying, “And Lo the Angel of the Lord;” the lilting dance rhythms of Baroque master, Heinrich Schütz’s, “Hodie Christu Natus Est;” and a folksong arrangement by Norwegian composer Ørjan Matre. The concert will also present “A Chanukah Fantasia” by Coreen Duffy, fun arrangements of “Jingle Bells” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and a wonderful African carol.
Musicologist Ed Wight will give a free lecture one hour prior to each concert in Room 132 of the Music Recital Hall building. Mr. Wight will provide background on the composers and the pieces to be performed. To read Mr. Wight’s program notes, click here.
