Grace Before Sleep is a concert about the power of music and love to inspire us towards gratitude, even in the midst of difficult times. From a celebration of the perfection and fragility of roses in Morten Lauridsen’s sensuous Rose Songs; to Benjamin Britten’s rhapsodic plea to St. Cecilia, music’s patron saint, to inspire us with “celestial fire;” to Kim André Arnesen’s deeply moving exploration of the triumph of the human spirit in “Even when he is silent;” together we travel a journey ending in gratitude and joy.
Guest artists Michal Palzewicz, cello; Sherril Wood, flute; are joined by actor Geoffrey Riley, who reprises his popular depiction of WA Mozart.
Featured works include:
Hymn to St. Cecilia by Benjamin Britten
Even when he is silent by Kim André Arnesen
Chansons des Roses by Morten Lauridsen
Had I the Cloths of Heaven by Jodi French
Choruses by WA Mozart
How do you keep the music playing by Michael Legrand arr. Alexander L’Estrange
World O World by Jacob Collier
Concert D: To the End in Songs
Sat., May 9, 2026, 7:30 p.m.
Sun., May 10, 2026, 2:00 p.m.

As part of this year’s James M Collier New Works Festival, composers Peter Relph and Jodi French explore the idea of transformation from discord into harmony in two commissioned premieres. The text of Relph’s “To the End in Songs” moves from a state of searching restlessness towards a state of peace. Jodi French’s “The Stranger Among You” is an exploration of home and belonging.
French’s work is inspired by Oregon Poet Laureate Lawson Inada. Both works are set for choir and orchestra and will feature internationally-renowned baritone soloist Christopheren Nomura. Both composers will be available for a brief Q & A following the concert.

About the repertory Singers
Join Southern Oregon Repertory Singers as we celebrate four decades of providing the highest quality choral music to the Rogue Valley. Our 70+ voice ensemble is composed of volunteer and paid singers, many of whom are professional performers and/or music educators. Under the direction of Dr. Paul French, retired Director of Choral Studies at Southern Oregon University, the chorus has gained national recognition from some of the most recognized conductors and soloists in the United States.
Support Us In Keeping Choral Music Alive
As with most performing groups, ticket prices comprise less than fifty percent of our yearly budget. We must rely on the generous donations of our patrons in order to continue to offer high-quality choral music in the Rogue Valley. We are very proud of the fact that we commission new music each year and that we take our music into the schools. We are committed to keeping classical choral music alive and well.
